Labor-market Segmentation and the Gender Wage Differential: an Industry-level Analysis Using Data from the 1998 Swiss Wage Structure Survey

In this paper, the relationship between labor-market segmentation and the gender wage gap is analyzed with data from the 1998 Swiss Wage Structure Survey. It is shown that in three selected industries (health-care industry, catering industry, banking and insurance industry) the unexplained and potentially discriminatory gender wage differential is substantially larger in the primary than in the secondary segment. This lends support to the (predominantly Institutionalist) notion that the secondary segment is primarily affected by competitive market forces. The unexplained wage differential between men in the primary and men in the secondary segment is very large and applies across all industries. For women, a similar result can be observed, although to a lesser extent. This paper also decomposes the gender wage gap encountered in selected occupations within the primary segment of the banking and insurance industry. Large unexplained wage differentials remain even after eliminating segregation as a possible cause for wage differences. JEL Classification: J31, J44, J71
